Project ATMOSPHERE is the comprehensive teacher professional development program based on studies in the atmospheric sciences. It is directed toward improving teacher effectiveness in generating interest and understanding in science, technology, and mathematics among students at precollege levels.
Major components of Project ATMOSPHERE include (a) the identification and training of a cadre of master atmospheric education resource teachers to assist the AMS in training other teachers on atmospheric and related topics, and (b) the development and implementation of scientifically-accurate and pedagogically-sound instructional resource materials for teachers.
In recognition of the underrepresentation of certain groups in the Earth system sciences, Project ATMOSPHERE incorporates a special AMS/NOAA initiative to promote minority participation in science through teacher enhancement. The goal is to train as many teachers as possible who are members of groups underrepresented in the sciences and/or teach (or will peer train teachers who teach) significant numbers of precollege students from underrepresented groups.
