  • How do I upload (a .zip or .tar.gz package of all) my LaTeX files?

    Authors can upload a .zip or .tar.gz package of all their LaTeX files. The system will then automatically unpack the files. Authors will need to set the item type and other file information. Follow the steps below to do this.

    Upload your .zip or .tar.gz file

    Select the "Choose File" button to browse your local system for the appropriate file. Then select "Attach This File". The file will be uploaded, unpacked, and the list of files will be displayed.

    Set the File Item Type

    The Item Type can be set for batches of files or for each file individually.

    The Item type must be set for each of the files that was unpacked. Follow the three steps in the image above to set the Item Type for batchs of files. Please note:

    • Set all your LaTeX files (NOT including figures) to an Item Type of "LaTeX File (.tex, .sty, .cls, .bst, .bib)"
    • Figure files must always be set to an Item Type of "Rendered Figure" for LaTeX submissions

    You may also set the Item Type for each file individually by using the "Choose" dropdown menu for each file.

    Entering Figure Information

    If you upload your figures as part of a .zip or .tar.gz package you will need to either Reload the Attach Files page or step forward and then step back to the Attach Files page after setting the Item type to "Rendered Figure". This will result in each of the Figure files in the file list displaying an "Edit Data" link.

    Select this link for each figure file. An "Edit Item Metadata Values" window will appear.

     

    Enter the figure number in the "Description" text box. For example if the file is to be used as figure 7 in your manuscript, enter "Figure 7", "Fig 7", "7", or any alternative that clearly identifies the figure number of the file. Select the "Figure Type" from the dropdown menu. This is an indicator of how the figure should be processed once the manuscript is accepted and how it will appear when published (Color or Black & White). Select the Save Changes button when complete. Repeat for each of your figures.

    Uploading Figures (and other files) Individually

    You may also choose to upload files individually. In particular uploading figures individually might be easier because data about the figure can be added at the time each figure is uploaded. 

    Follow the steps in the image above to upload files individually. After selecting the "Attach This File" button the file will be added to the file list.

    Figure data was added at the point the figure was uploaded so you only need to access the Edit Data link if you need to modify the information you entered.

  • I have submitted a new/revised manuscript to the AMS’s Editorial Manager system for peer review, but the PDF is not building correctly.

    If the PDF fails to build you will be presented with the contents of the LaTeX Error Log file in the system-generated PDF. Review the contents of this file. In particular, look for the word "Error" in the log file. The specific error will be indicated (e.g. missing files, syntax errors, incorrect file types, etc.). For example,

    ! LaTeX Error: Unknown graphics extensions: .tiff.

    Some common problem are listed here:

    • Redered vs Non-Rendered Figure-Make sure the item type for your figures is set to "Rendered" so that the system recognizes they should be included in the PDF generated from the LaTeX code.
    • Remove ALL directory paths-here should be NO directory paths to any figure or reference files in your .tex file (this includes the current directory "./") .  The system is unaware of any directory structure. You should include only the name of your figure and reference files. For example:

    Do NOT include directory paths like this:

    \bibliographystyle{./ametsoc}

    \bibliography{./bibliography/references}

     

    \noindent\includegraphics[width=7.0in]{../figures/surface.eps}

    These must be changed to remove the directory paths:

    \bibliographystyle{ametsoc}

    \bibliography{references}

    \noindent\includegraphics[width=7.0in]{surface.eps}

    • Use only .eps, .pdf, jpg, or .png figure file types-The use of .tiff files is no longer support by the pdftex program.
    • Include the figure file extension in the figure file name-You must include the figure file extension (.eps, .pdf, .jpg, or .png) in the name of figure file so the system can determine whether the pdflatex or latex program should be used to build the PDF
    • Ensure your .bib file and all figures are uploaded-If you have done the above items and the references or figures are still not formatted correctly, double check that there are no missing files.  We recommend you upload both the ametsoc.sty and ametsoc.bst files also.   The latest versions are installed on the system, but you may have an older version of the template and we do not guarantee the style files are backwards compatible. Uploading the .bbl file is not sufficient. You must either copy and paste the contents of the .bbl into your .tex file or upload the .bib file.
    • Do not include the file extension (.bst and .bib) in the filename when using the \bibliographystyle or \bibliography commands. Including the extension is incorrect syntax and will result in your references and citation not being formatted.  For example

    Do NOT include the file extension in the following commands:

    \bibliographystyle{ametsoc.bst}

    \bibliography{references.bib}

    These must be changed to remove the three letter file extension

    \bibliographystyle{ametsoc}

    \bibliography{references}

     

  • How do I layout a table or figure in landscape?

     

    In order to layout a table in landscape you need to add use of the "rotating" package:

     

    \usepackage{rotating}

     

    and then create the table using the "sidewaystable" environment:

    For landscape figures use:

    Also, the template uses the endfloat package to move tables and figures to the end of the document. By default, the "endfloat" package is aware of the "figure" and "table" environments only. To make "endfloat" also move the "sidewaysfigure" and "sidewaystable" environments to the end of the paper, you could download the file endfloat.cfg(.tar) and save it in the same folder in which your LaTeX (.tex) document is located.

  • My reference citations appear as question marks when building the PDF on my personal computer.

    • The bibtex program is responsible for formatting the references. So, after running the latex command once, make sure you run the bibtex command once to format the references and then the latex command twice more to clear up any dependencies.
    • Ensure you either upload your .bib file or you copy and paste the contents of your .bbl file into your .tex file. Simply uploading your .bbl file is not sufficient and will result in a missing reference section and questions marks for each citation.
  • I want to have a figure fill an entire page. How can I do this and have the caption on the facing page?

    To have the full sized figure on one page and the caption on the facing page you need to do something similar to that shown in the following snippet of code:

  • The figure and/or table numbering is incorrect in the appendices. Instead of the correct appendix numbering (e.g. A1, A2, A3, etc.) the numbering is continued from the main text of the manuscript.

    This is a known issue and will be corrected when possible. For now allowing the figure/table numbering to continue from the main text is acceptable.  AMS copyeditors will correct the numbering when your manuscript is accepted and goes through our production workflow.

  • Tables are not double spaced.

    This is a known issue and will be corrected when possible. .  For now, you don't need to worry about it.  Your paper will be accepted with single spaced tables.

  • How do I add the required line number to my manuscript.

    The code for adding line numbers exists in the latest version (5/1/11) of the AMS LaTeX template. If you are using your own files do the following:

    Add the following lines to your .tex file in the preamble (before the the \begin{document} command). The \usepackage{lineno} command must be placed after any use of \uspackage{amsmath} package commands. 

    \usepackage{lineno}

    \linenumbers

    Do NOT use the pagewise option to the lineno package or the \setpagewiselinenumbers, \pagewiselinenumbers or \begin{pagewiselinenumbers} commands.

    Pagewise numbering requires the running LaTeX/PDFLaTeX an unspecified number of times until the numbers start at 1 on each page. This is not possible with an automated system.

    Do NOT use the "$$" command for display equations. The "$$" command (which is a Plain TeX command) in your .tex files must be replaced with "\[" and "\]", \begin{displaymath} and \end{displaymath}, \begin{equation*} and \end{equation*}, or some other math display command. The $$ command is obsolete and should never be used. Beyond known spacing issues with the use of "$$" there are known problems with its interaction with the lineno package that adds the line numbers to your document.     There is a known issue with the lineno package and the numbering of text in the paragraph preceding a display equation. This can be resolved by downloading the updated ametsoc.sty (.tar) file (as of 7/23/2012) that includes code to resolve this problem.

    If you are not using the AMS LaTeX template and the associated ametsoc.sty file, then add this snippet of code to your .tex file or the end of the .sty file you are using:

    If you would prefer a manual solution then wrap each display equation with the linenomath environment. For example:

  • Citations and equation, table, and figure references in my figure captions result in an error. How can this be fixed?

    \cite and \ref are what is called "fragile" commands. They must be "protected" using the \protect command when used in a caption.  For example:

    \begin{figure}

    ...

    \caption{The graph of the temperature profile given by \protect\ref{some_eqtn} developed by \protect\cite{Anderson98}}

    \end{figure}

  • Are pstricks and psfrag supported?

    The system-generated PDF is created using PDFLaTeX. PDFLaTeX is not compatiable with the use of pstricks or psfrag. Therefore, the pstricks and psfrag packages are not supported. Authors should create a driver file to generate a standalone PDF version of any figures that use the pstricks or psfrag packages. The PDF version of the figure can then be included in the .tex file using the standard \includegraphics command.
