Fellows Criteria

[Constitution Article III, Section 6: "Those eligible for election to Fellow shall have made outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years."

Nomination to Fellow is open to Members.

New Fellows are elected each year by the Council at its fall meeting from a slate submitted by the Fellows Committee of not more than two-tenths of 1 percent of all AMS Members.

Nominations considered by the Committee are those submitted in the current and the preceding two years.]

Fellows Nomination Procedure

The procedure for Fellows nominations is restricted to electronic submissions.  The nominator, an active AMS member, is responsible for uploading the entire nomination package.  On the nominations page, you must enter your email address and password, then click submit.  From menu box, select nomination for Fellow members.  The requirements for nomination packages are: completion of on-line form (3 pages max.) and a nomination letter limited to one page; along with three one-page letters of support.  Of these three letters, one support letter is required from an individual outside the nominee’s home institution.  These letters should supplement the information in the sponsor’s original nomination of this individual.  (DO NOT LIST PUBLICATIONS OR INCLUDE CV.)

Helpful Hints for Fellow Nominations

Thank you for taking the time to recognize a colleague through a Fellow nomination. 
Please note, that new fellow nominations will not be processed if they do not follow the length requirements, that is:

  • The online nomination form cannot exceed three pages, with 12-point font. 
  • Letters (nomination letter, three supporting letters) cannot exceed one page, with 12-point font.

Some suggestions on how to achieve this. 

  • Use bullets rather than paragraphs on the on-line nomination form to lower word count and make the material easier to read.
  • To keep the nomination letter short, coordinate with those writing the support letters to make sure they include the important details.   Some nominations have each supporting letter cover a separate area.
  • Use plain paper rather than letterhead to save valuable room.

One support letter is required from an individual outside the nominee’s home institution.  Additional letters from an organization other than the nominees tend to be a benefit.

The AMS membership is divided roughly evenly among the public, private, and academic sectors.  The opportunities for achievements that match the qualifications for Fellow, namely outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial number of years will vary with sector.  Some factors that one might consider highlighting:

  • New discoveries (insights, instruments, techniques), as indicated by papers or patents.  Particularly for government and private sector, it might be necessary to note that some documentation is proprietary or classified.
  • Development/deployment of important technology
  • Transferring technology to operations
  • Service to the community (beyond standard job duties), including collaboration with the other sectors to improve the weather and climate enterprise
  • Service to the AMS
  • Participation in the CCM program
  • Contributions to education.  For the academic sector, could be writing a textbook, revolutionizing teaching methods, running online courses or AMS short courses, or working with other sectors to make sure that formal education is relevant.   In addition to partnering with academia to make education relevant, public/private sectors have impact through maintaining up-to-date staff and providing educational opportunities.
  • Working with the public
  • Mentoring
  • Exhibiting strong ethical behavior; setting high ethical standards.
